Aiken County SC

With one of the nation’s oldest continually used polo fields, Aiken was founded as a winter colony for wealthy Northerners to spend their winters in the early 1800s. They often brought their horses for hunting and polo, and Aiken remains an equestrian hotspot where Olympians and Kentucky Derby winners train. Equestrian activities abound, including the Spring Steeplechase, which is the social event of the year. Downtown Aiken is home to a brewery and dozens of quaint locally owned stores and restaurants (chain restaurants and stores are not allowed in downtown). The nearby Savannah River Site nuclear facility employs about 11,000 people, most of whom live in Aiken. Hitchcock Woods, the largest urban park in the country, offers miles of trails for walking and horseback riding. Aiken has been ranked as the best small town in the South by Southern Living, and the University of South Carolina Aiken has been recognized as one of the best colleges in the region by U.S. News and World Report more than 20 times. Aiken repeatedly is at the top of the list of best places to retire.
